SAMPLE DIALOGS
Dialog 1
TOM: Would anybody have any objections if I were to contact our partner?
JIM: What do want to tell them?
TOM: I just want to give them a progress report to show we are holding up our end of the bargain.
JIM: That sounds reasonable enough.
TOM: So that would work for everyone, then?
JIM: Sure, I don’t see why not.
TOM: Great, thanks. I’ll contact them this afternoon.
Dialog 2
TOM: Good to see the whole team here, today. Does anybody have any questions before I go on?
JIM: Yeah, I have one question. Actually more of a request…
TOM: Go on.
JIM: Would it be alright if I skipped the rest of this meeting? I just got a call from our customer and they want me to follow up on something.
TOM: I’m afraid that won’t be possible. I need you here.
JIM: So what should I say to the customer?
TOM: Tell the truth: you asked, and the boss said no!
Dialog 3
TOM: Could you send us those documents we requested?
JIM: No, I’m afraid that’s not possible.
TOM: Why not?
JIM: They’re still in preparation.
TOM: I see. Well can we proceed without them?
JIM: That will also be an impossibility. You need the information in these documents to go ahead.
TOM: Well, can I just sit here twiddling my thumbs, then?
JIM: Sure, be our guest!
Dialog 4
TOM: Could you authorize this procurement form before you leave?
JIM: No way.
TOM: Why not?
JIM: I wasn’t made aware of any procurement.
TOM: Of course you were. You requested that we make these purchases at the last staff meeting.
JIM: Did I?
TOM: Yes.
JIM: Well, then, I suppose I should authorize them, then, shouldn’t I?
TOM: I can ask again using the word please, if you like.
JIM: Yes, please!
Dialog 5
TOM: Would there be any serious consequences if I took tomorrow off?
JIM: Sad to say, we can’t allow that.
TOM: Oh, no. I was planning to take my kids to the zoo.
JIM: That sounds like fun, but we really need you here.
TOM: Ok then, not tomorrow. But what about Friday? Would the world cease to exist if I were absent for a few hours?
JIM: That we could probably arrange.
TOM: So I can take off?
JIM: Sure, go ahead.
